Year 1 Maths at home: 10-minute activities that build real understanding
You do not need a full worksheet session every day. Short conversations with real objects can reveal whether a child understands the mathematics behind the answer.
Number and place value
Choose a number such as 36. Build it as 3 tens and 6 ones, then ask for a different partition such as 2 tens and 16 ones. Link: AC9M1N02.
Say 58 and ask for one more, one less and where it would sit on a number line or 120 chart. Link: AC9M1N01.
Addition and subtraction
Use 8 and 5 in one joining story and one separating story. Ask the child to model each before calculating. Link: AC9M1N04–N05.
Use counters to solve 8 + 5 by moving 2 counters to make 10. Ask why the 5 was split into 2 and 3.
Measurement and space
Measure a book using identical blocks or paperclips. Check the start point, gaps, overlaps and unit size. Link: AC9M1M02.
Give a three-step route around a room using left, right, forward and backward. Swap roles and let the child write the route. Link: AC9M1SP02.
Data in real life
Ask a small household question such as favourite fruit. Record one response per person with tally marks, then make a one-to-one picture display and compare frequencies. Link: AC9M1ST01–ST02.
When to stop and reteach
If the child can get an answer only by copying the exact example, return to the model or concrete materials. If you are unsure which concept is blocking progress, use SkillrHub’s diagnostic rather than assigning more random questions.
